Focus on Life: Week 17: Color

Sally Russick of The Studio Sublime is hosting a year long challenge which is... sublime... as you'd expect with such a studio name. The challenge is named 'Focusing on Life' and every week Sally is sending a prompt on what should we focus the following week.

The prompt of this week?!

Did you ever notice the way color can effect our mood and perception of the environment around us?

Colors can elevate our mood or change our perception of an object. Bright vivid colors can make us feel positive where a darker color can evoke a heaviness. Subtle colors create a softness. Florescent color not only can grab attention, florescent literally scream at you to pay attention and that can cause a feeling of anxiety.

Whether photographing a full shot of amazing colors or small pops of color against a muted background, this week break out your camera and capture some color. Think about how the colors of the shot effect your mood, feelings, perception of your surroundings! Focus on how the colors impact your decision to take a particular shot.

Did I notice colour? Sally must be kidding: I breath colour. I am incredibly sensitive to hues and shades, I purely hate dull colours and can't stand black at all. The lack of colour during winter made me create what we now call our 'indoor garden': since then I don't think there has been one single day when I don't have flowers on my desk: colourful fragrant flowers.

I love pastels, I can't even look at bright neon colours for too long (I get physically sick). I love blues and I am careful designing with reds. If I know I'll have a hard day at work I will dress in red - it energizes me and it also made others a tad careful around me :) I love orange and gold, and baby chicks yellow - but mostly for flowers, not for design.

I was wondering what to capture for this week - until nature itself presented me the perfect moment. It is a beautiful 'Focus on Life' moment, I couldn't have staged it better myself!

Life in motion: robin eggs (Focus on Life, week 17) :: All Pretty Things

Look at what we found in one of the bushes (the one right below the main bedroom)!! A few years back the robins made their nest in another bush, the one in front of my desk. Then they made it under the roof for a few years - and now... they moved lower again. I always thought they lay 3 eggs, this nest has 4 brilliant blue eggs! With our Easter approaching - they just made me want to colour the eggs right now :)

Life in motion: robin nest (Focus on Life, week 17) :: All Pretty Things

I was worried: for a couple of days I could only see the blue eggs - I just went outside again to check and there she (or he) was: the parent robin, carefully watching us and not moving one nano meter! Not a lot of colour there - but a lot of Focus on Life :)

Please get yourself a glass of wine or a cup of tea and join us as we gather at Miss Sally's to chat in and about colour!

  3. I am going to miss the Robin that nested right outside my kitchen window. We moved from that place so will have new sights here. Colors of nature are the very best and I love that turquoise blue!

  4. Awwww good job dada! I once "rescued" a baby robin from the street. I was walking home with a friend lived a few houses away. Carrying my recyled foam meat tray art we saw half an egg on the road (I was probably not more than 5). The egg was still on the birds head and there was a little beak going nuts.... We used our trays scooped it up and brought it home. My brother got a heating pad and made it a nest of a sock in a cereal bowl. I think he fed it bread soaked in milk or similar from a toothpick. I remember sitting with it until bedtime. In the morning my brother (with blood shot eyes) came to tell me it had died during the night. [ I don't recall the burial details I think that was done. I do remember the spot in the garden] Thank you for a gorgeous picture and another walk down memory lane!

  6. Those eggs are such a lovely colour... But we have 3 cats so they don't tend to build nests close enough to the ground to see into them!

Love the robin eggs. That blue is soooo pretty! Great post. In fact...you could keep us "posted" of their progress....Thanks!

  12. That's brilliant! Oh my it looks like someone colored them for Easter for sure. Last year I followed robins from egg to hopping out of the nest. Loved it! Hope you'll catch that too.

  19. Cool pic. I always wondered why I would find robin egg shell where there was no tree near until I read that Mamma robin cleans the nest and deposits the empty shells away from the nest to detour predators away from her babies.
