Treasures (2)

A week or so ago I received a new package from my mom - with more treasures!! [If you'd like to read about previous treasures, please read here]

Lots of beads, but not only!

There are strands of pastel stone chips, coral chips, freshwater pearls, and beautiful wood (I know what I can finally make my boy!)

There are rose quartz beads (I have the perfect project for them), a bone-bead strand (gorgeous), a chain-like strand (base metal) that's about my age and has been worn by both my mom and I in various ways, mostly as a belt), a strand of deep night-blue glass beads on chain (also 30+ years old), and some strands of various black beads (my mom is de-stashing :))

There are various little pieces, earrings that are older than me, glass strands that are probably my age - all in perfect state and ready to be up-cycled! The little happy strand of colourful beads is very cute, but very plastic - however I am going to figure out a way of making something out of it (accessories, bookmarks - any more ideas?), it's as happy as a sunny day!

There are belt 'buckles' - all more than 40 years old (I do remember them always being in the house)

There is silk-voile, already cut to be made into something (if my memory serves me right it was supposed to be a pair of pant-skirts, one I was making for my mom, after making myself a pair... never made it beyond the cutting part, mostly because while gorgeous the material is a pain to work with). Mom thought I could use it and I will try to make some silk string / ribbon out of it, we'll see how that goes.

What you see on the right side, that cute pink flower is, in fact, a tiny purse crocheted by mom.

This is how it looks in a close-up:

More beads: in beautiful light-blue colours, some green agate (I believe), more of the wood strands, and the one on the right - a gorgeous looking strand, very light... unfortunately plastic as well. Again, I welcome ideas on how to use those beads, they are very pretty and the colours are amazing.

Last, but not least, there was this:

If you thought it's mine - you're right, must be one of the first (if not *the* first) knitted dress I had. I always thought it was made by my mom (the unfinished boot next to it was my mom's product :) by the time she had time to finish the first one I grew up so much it wouldn't fit anymore :)). I was surprised and warmed to find out it was, in fact, knitted by my grandmother. Life sure has its own ways of working - I am not a pink person, and when I made the pink bracelet I had her in mind... now I found that my pink dress was made by her. Very touching moment.

These are my treasures - I shouldn't have to buy any beads for the next 10 years (but I did, of course :)). I have a few more surprises to show you, hopefully the weekend will allow me some breathing time (read 'picture taking' time).

Until then - what treasures did you discover recently?

  3. Your Mum has certainly spoiled you, Alicia! Re: your comment that you shouldn't buy for ten years... holding beads just makes us crave more beads, it's a vicious cycle. No danger we'll stop buying, even should we run out of storage (we'll just run out and buy more storage!)

The little knitted gown is so special! Maybe it will be a family heirloom you pass down.
